The Seasonal Element for Spring – Wood

Each season I will be introducing a new element that represents our current season.

For Spring, this element is the element of Wood. I hope that you will take the time to enjoy the series and share with your friends, families and networks!

Soul Lightening Acupressure and Zero Balancing are rooted in the Chinese Five Element Acupressure model, which is based on the movement and relationship between energetic pathways in the body. The Five Elements (Water, Wood, Fire, Earth and Metal) are associated with various organs, senses, emotions and patterns of response. Good health is evident when there is a yin/yang balance between the flows of energy associated with each element. When the energy flow is disrupted due to held stress and tension, then dis-ease (a lack of ease or harmony) can eventually lead to health issues, illness and major disease processes.

In the Five Elements model, Spring is the Wood element, associated with the Liver and Gall Bladder meridians (energy pathway). Wood is the bridge between Heaven and Earth, symbolized by a tree dropping roots deep into the Earth while the branches reach up towards Heaven. Spring is a time of rising energy from the winter respite. The potential germinating within us is ready to burst forth and expand. Spring is a time of working on projects and completing tasks. Use the Wood energy to tackle that To Do list. To balance the Wood energy of action and hard work, take time for self care. Slow down, pause and enjoy the physical signs of spring opening around you. What is waiting to burst forth in your life this season?

The strength of the Wood element is seen in a strong leader who takes charge, makes a plan and gets the job done. Wood needs clear boundaries to function efficiently. An imbalance in this element shows up as impatience, inflexibility, a short temper, difficulty making decisions or a “my way or the highway” attitude. Imbalances in the body present as inflammation, painful joints, shoulder pain, jaw pain, brittle nails, migraines, eye problems, constipation, exhaustion and female/gynecological issues. Symptoms on the left side of the body often indicate a Liver deficiency.

Are you aware of some of the imbalances of the Wood element? Consider a spring detox with a liver cleanse.  Begin your day drinking a cup of warm water and 1/2 fresh squeezed lemon. If you can’t drink this without sweetener, try adding 1/2 tsp local honey. You may also enjoy a cup of peppermint or green tea.  Avoid liver toxins such as alcohol and acetaminophen.

The stress response for Wood is anger and blame, especially when you feel others have been treated unfairly. If you find yourself feeling the excess of anger and frustration, take a brisk walk or hit some tennis balls to release the energy of the emotions. You can also take your frustration out by molding  clay, kneading bread dough or pounding a drum. Forceful stomping, punching, yelling or screaming out loud when alone can also release  held tension in your body. Following these forceful activities, try taking a few deep breaths to activate the Lung Meridian, which controls/influences the Liver Meridian.

When the Wood element is in balance, you are able to be more flexible in life, like a tree swaying in the wind, instead of standing rigid in old beliefs that may no longer serve you. Having a clear sense of self with healthy boundaries is important in the Wood element, so you are not overwhelmed by outside forces. The invitation of the Wood element is to transform your anger and frustration into forgiveness, patience and flexibility. Try practicing Ho’oponopono (I’m sorry, please forgive me, thank you, I love you) or the LovingKindness prayer (May you be safe … happy … well … at peace) as a spiritual practice of forgiveness and compassion.

If you have difficulty sleeping between 11 pm and 1 am (Gall Bladder) or  1 – 3 am (Liver), try gently holding the balancing points for that meridian. The balancing points are located at GB 40 (on outer ankle, then slide slightly forward toward the front of the foot, in the depression between the bone and tendon) and LV 3 (on top of the foot, 1/2 inch down from the intersection between the big toe and second toe.) You can also hold the side of the nailbed of the big toe (LV1) as an alternative. If you are unsure of the location, look at images online for GB 40, LV 3 or LV1.  Hold the points on each side of the body for 1 – 2 minutes.

Sour foods stimulate the wood element, such as the taste of lemon in your mouth. Foods that support the Liver/Gall Bladder are dark leafy greens, especially dandelion root, kale and asparagus. Other foods to support Wood are beets, green smoothies, fresh sprouts, garlic, turmeric, broccoli, lemons/limes, grapefruit, blueberries, strawberries, cherries, avocados, almonds, and salmon. Lightly steam your vegetables to make them easier to digest without losing all the nutrients.
