The month of December at DW Healing Arts is about finding ways to cope with your stress during the rush of seasonal happenings. In our last newsletter, we focused on those of us out there busily coordinating our holiday events with little time included for self-care.
1. Use Your “Scents”!
More than any other, the sense of smell is attached to your memory.
Whether it is mom’s peppermint fudge or the pine of a fresh Christmas tree, emotions are evoked by the scents that surround us. Feelings of happiness, sadness, celebration, love: these can be connected to the smells that best represent them for us.
This year I want you to take the time out to remember what scents relax you. Using scented oils, incense, or candles can nearly instantly transport you to a space of true peace.
Tip: Find a place for yourself away from the rush of the day and light your favorite candle or warm, scented oil. Sit or stand peacefully, allowing the smell to work its magic and envelope you in it’s delicious warmth.
Be decadent with yourself with delightful scents. Be caring.
2. Hear the Song, Dance Like Nobody’s Watching!
Not everyone likes them but nearly everyone loves them at the right time – listening to holiday tunes! Lifting your inner spirits is as easy as 1.2.3 when you put on your favorite tunes and lose yourself to the rhythm of the seasonal beats.
Whatever your choice, using the power of music to release stress has long been recognized for its positive effects on the brain. This year, use it to your advantage!
Tip: Find yourself hurrying through the day? Are you having an especially rough day? Turn on your favorite holiday music, take a song break and sing along with the song! Before you know it the music will have you “dancing” wherever you are, smiling wider, and will give you an instant emotional boost.
P.S. – You don’t have to listen to music, you can also use meditations, relaxations, sounds of nature or any other audio that suits you best!
3. Celebrate the Delights of the Season!
The sense of “taste” is a sense that all of us can relate to. During the festivities of this time of the year we are fortunate to have the bounty of the seasons to choose from when deciding on our breakfasts, lunches, and dinners.
Stop the frustrations of planning those huge holiday menus and take a little food break for yourself by indulging in healthy alternatives for foods that help you to relax.
Eating well and grabbing that taste of happiness can lift the spirits of yourself and those around you.
Here are some healthy and delicious snack options for you to consider:
- Cashews & Nuts
- Dark Chocolate
- Ginger and Chamomile Teas
- …and so many more.
Tip: There are so many recipes out there that can work in conjunction with your own stress relief practices. Remember: Self-Care encompasses taking care of yourself by engaging all your senses. Take the time you need to bring creative ways of caring for yourself back into your active, day to day life.
